A large number of the world’s most successful businesses are family owned and run, and as a business model, the family business has huge strengths. Family members tend to have long term investment horizons and bring levels of loyalty, trust and commitment that are the envy of non-family businesses.
However, the high rate of family business failures, particularly during periods of transition when two or more generations are involved, highlights the fact that working with family can be extremely challenging, puts relationships under pressure, often in very subtle ways, and ultimately impacts adversely on the business.
Unfortunately, so often when family issues are causing business problems, the tendency, for a number of reasons, is for the business leaders, the family and their professional advisors to focus on solving the "business problem". The advisors because that is what they are trained to do; the family because it is too complex and emotional to address the family issues; the family leader because it is almost impossible to be accepted by all as being objective and impartial and of course he/she may actually be the problem!
